    Cyber Security for Community Groups

Community groups, social enterprises and small volunteer-led charities get targeted because they hold real personal data and rarely have anyone looking after IT. CyberSafe Coach+ gives calm, jargon-free guidance in the order that matters most, starting with a free 5-minute check. Groups that qualify can get fully funded access through CyberSafe Foundation CIC.

Why do attackers target small community groups?

Attackers know that community groups process real money, small grants, donations, hall hire, lottery sales, but rarely have dedicated IT or finance staff. The combination of shared inboxes, rotating volunteers and personal devices makes it easy for a single convincing message to slip through.

    • Volunteer Gmail accounts being targeted with fake 'urgent' messages from the chair
    • Shared logins to Mailchimp, Eventbrite or fundraising tools that nobody changes when volunteers leave
    • Spoofed donation links shared on social media or community WhatsApp groups
    • Mis-sent emails revealing beneficiary contact details to the whole mailing list

What should a community group do first?

    1. Turn on 2-factor sign-in on email, your fundraising tools and any shared social accounts.
    2. Move shared logins into a free password manager and remove leavers each quarter.
    3. Agree a simple "we never ask for money by text" rule and share it with volunteers and donors.
    4. Pick one trustee to be the named cyber lead, even a 30-minute monthly check makes a difference.
    5. Run our free 5-minute safety check so you have a baseline you can show funders.

Can a small community group get this for free?

CyberSafe Foundation CIC subsidises access for small UK charities and community groups with income under £100k. Paid plans start at £35/month if you don't qualify.
